What the announcement says

Shopify’s 8 September 2026 changelog states that a variant can hold up to twenty barcodes. It describes typed codes, bulk editing and CSV support, while retaining the first barcode for destinations expecting one value. Existing barcodes remain in place. This report covers that dated announcement, checked on 29 October 2026; it does not establish how a particular third-party connector handles the change.

The practical opportunity is better identifier coverage. The accompanying risk is collecting codes without agreeing what each code represents. A longer list is useful only when it still identifies the correct sellable item.

Separate variants from packaging

Begin with a sample from each supplier and write down what the code identifies: an individual unit, a multipack, an outer carton or an internal shelf label. Photograph the packaging beside the item description for internal review. A carton code should not silently lead staff to sell one unit when the warehouse expects a case.

Assign a catalog owner to approve new associations. Record the source of a code and the date it was confirmed. This evidence is especially helpful when a supplier changes packaging but keeps a visually similar product name.

Choose the leading identifier deliberately

Decide which identifier should be presented to systems that accept a single value. Review the needs of your connected sales channels, labeling process and inventory integrations. Document the decision per product family where the requirements differ.

Do not reorder a working list merely to make it look tidy. Before any reorder, compare a known export and a representative destination record. Ask the integration owner to confirm the mapping. A feed that remains technically valid can still carry an identifier that is unsuitable for its destination.

Import with a reconciliation sheet

Build a change sheet that pairs the store’s variant reference with each proposed addition and its evidence. Preserve leading zeros and prevent spreadsheet formatting from turning long numeric identifiers into rounded values. Review repeated codes across different variants as exceptions requiring an explanation.

Process a small batch first. Re-export or inspect the affected records and compare every proposed association with the approved sheet. Keep unrelated title, price and inventory edits out of the same batch so a reviewer can understand exactly what changed.

Rehearse real scanning tasks

Prepare a test tray containing similar colors, different sizes, a multipack and an older package. Ask the operator to scan the code they would normally encounter during receiving, picking or selling. Record the resulting variant and quantity expectation.

Also test a damaged or unrecognized code and an accidental repeat scan. The acceptance question is whether staff can recover without guessing. AMZ12 has not performed these tests; they are a suggested protocol for a merchant’s own environment, including its connected scanners and apps.

Make identifier cleanup routine

Keep a queue for codes that were rejected, duplicated or found on unexpected packaging. Resolve the cause rather than adding an alternate code simply to bypass an operational obstacle. Retain an audit note when a relationship is corrected.

After the initial rollout, sample newly received stock against the catalog. Supplier records and physical packaging can diverge over time. A modest review built into receiving is more sustainable than waiting until a checkout failure forces someone to investigate the entire identifier history under pressure.
