Research basis and core role
This is a research-based AMZ12 assessment of Microsoft Clarity, not a hands-on test. Microsoft’s official overview describes session recordings, heatmaps, AI summaries and chat features for investigating user behaviour. Microsoft operates the service. Our assessment focuses on how a store might evaluate those capabilities without adopting the provider’s promotional performance claims.
Where it may fit
Our editorial judgement is that Clarity is worth considering when a team has a specific question about how people interact with a page. Begin with an uncertainty that someone can act on: whether a delivery explanation is being noticed, where a product-selection flow becomes confusing or how a navigation change is being used.
Choose a small set of pages and a defined review period. Record the question before looking at individual sessions. This helps keep an interesting example from becoming an unsupported explanation for every customer. A useful finding should lead to a proposed change and a clear way to judge that change afterwards. It should not depend on the reviewer’s ability to tell a convincing story.
Constraints to resolve
Our recommendation is to treat visual behavioural evidence as a starting point for investigation. A pattern of clicks does not, by itself, tell the team what a customer intended. Compare observations with support questions and the purpose of the page before making a large redesign decision. Keep alternative explanations in the review notes.
Before rollout, ask the responsible colleagues to review collection settings, access and the pages in scope. Identify any sensitive journeys that require particular care within the organisation’s process. For AI-assisted summaries, agree how a reviewer will check the underlying evidence. These are evaluation priorities, not legal conclusions or claims about the protection offered by a particular configuration.
Evaluation checklist
- Choose one practical question and the pages it concerns.
- Assign an owner for collection settings and access.
- Review several examples before describing a pattern.
- Check AI-assisted conclusions against underlying observations.
- Record a proposed change and an assessment plan.
AMZ12’s assessment
Shortlist Clarity when the team has time to interpret observations and follow through on findings. A focused question is more valuable than accumulating recordings without a review routine. Retain uncertainty alongside each recommendation so others can assess the evidence. AMZ12 enquiries request independent editorial help with this profile; Microsoft handles Clarity’s product, account and technical support.
