What the provider offers
Shopify presents theme-based storefronts with visual editing, custom Liquid themes and headless development options using Hydrogen or its APIs. Its online commerce offering sits alongside checkout, order and inventory tools.
This is a research-based assessment of official information, not a hands-on test. Shopify operates the service; AMZ12 provides independent editorial guidance. Our judgement is that the most useful starting question is how much store infrastructure your team wants to manage.
Where it may fit
Shortlist Shopify when a small operating team needs a repeatable way to publish products and change merchandising without owning every technical layer. A managed foundation can be attractive when maintenance competes with photography, fulfilment and customer service for attention.
Write down the five changes your team makes most often: a promotion, a navigation update, a product option, a delivery promise and a return message. Ask the person who will maintain the store to complete each during evaluation. A polished home page says little about the daily workload.
Constraints to investigate
Our editorial concern is the combined cost and dependency of the whole setup. List every proposed app, its owner, its data access and the process that would stop if it became unavailable. Request current terms for the exact plan and country rather than budgeting from an introductory offer.
For unusual product configuration or checkout requirements, ask for a written explanation of the implementation path before committing. Distinguish a configuration setting from an app dependency and from custom development. Assign someone to approve ongoing changes.
A practical evaluation checklist
Use a representative order containing variants, a discount and your normal shipping destination. Include a refund, an out-of-stock item and a customer asking to change an address. These are proposed checks, not results observed by AMZ12.
Review mobile product pages, accessibility, tax settings, staff permissions, data export needs and integration ownership. Compare the full annual operating budget, including design work and paid extensions where applicable. Record which requirements remain unproven and who must resolve them.
AMZ12 decision guidance
Choose on the basis of a maintainable operating model. A simpler launch may be preferable to a highly customised storefront if the latter leaves routine updates waiting for a developer. Keep your acceptance criteria short enough to revisit after launch.
